DESIGNS FOR LEARNING IN AN EXTENDED - CiteSeerX

London: Arnold. Multimodality (Kress) Multimodality is a theory which looks at the many different modes that people use to communicate with each other and to express themselves. This theory is relevant as an increase in technology tools, and associated access to multimedia composing software, has led to people being able to easily use many modes in art, writing, music, and dance and every-day interactions with each other [2] . Multimodality looks beyond language and examines these multiple modes of communication and meaning making. Multimodality: A Social Semiotic Approach to Contemporary Communication represents a long-awaited and much anticipated addition to the study of multimodality from the scholar who pioneered and continues to play a decisive role in shaping multimodality studies (Kress and V an Leeuwen 2001, 2006; see also Jewitt 2009). In the book under review, Kress pursues his lifelong interest in the pedagogic dimensions of multimodality . ‘Bezemer and Kress have produced what may well be the landmark text on multimodal analysis, the maturity of which can be judged from its bold and confident synthesis of data, method and theoretical implications, and from the profoundly innovative approach to learning it offers.
